Insecure Season 5 Is Renewed!
Back on May 1, when the fourth season was only a few weeks into airing, HBO announced the renewal of Insecure Season 5. In a statement, Amy Gravitt, the executive vice president of HBO Programming, said that they are thrilled that Issa, Prentice, and the whole Insecure team are coming back together. She continued to say that as they laugh and cringe with this recognition, their stories make one feel less lonely in this world.
After the renewal news surfaced, stars of the show like Rae, Jay Ellis, and Yvonne Orji celebrated this news on social media. In a tweet, Rae said that they are all very grateful that they are coming back with the fifth season. Then on May 4, Rae shared a picture of the Insecure writers and captioned it with “back to work” for the fifth season. They were on a video chat. Some of the attendees from the video call included the star and the co-creator herself, producer- Prentice Penny, and writer/director Natasha Rothwell.
What Will Happen?
By the end of the fourth season, Issa and Molly finally met after weeks of tension, frustration, and arguments. They did meet, but that doesn’t mean that their broken friendship will mend quickly. In fact, the writers have hinted that they don’t want Issa and Molly to get back where they were before. They will be a 2.0 version of themselves.
Speaking of Issa and Lawrence’s relationship, Lawrence revealed that his ex, Condola is pregnant with his child. She is the same person he was supposed to break-up with. In an interview, the creators revealed that the scene was open-ended for viewers’ interpretation.
Penny says that they are trying to understand whether Issa-Lawrence or Issa Nathan are better together. So, that question is still up in the air. He added that there are many other potential story themes that the show might explore. Issa’s professional success, where her relationship with Molly stands, or whether or not Molly will find love. They say that they are playing on that story again. They are still playing with the question of the success or failure of life.
Production Status and Release Date
Recently, Issa Rae recently shared a picture of Instagram that gives viewers an insight that the creators have started working on the fifth season. She posted a picture of a virtual table through Zoom. In the photo, viewers can see the script from the first episode of the show’s fifth season. From all the insights that Rae has given through her social media, we know that she and the writing team were working on the show remotely. Since then, it looks like they have completed the writing. Now they are gearing up to get into productions if they haven’t already. Ever since the reading table update, there has been no official update on what’s happening on the show.
Back in May, in an interview with Variety, revealed their plans. Rae said that they are hoping to get back into production by the Fall of 2020. If the team hasn’t yet got into production, we can be assured that the team will start production in 2021.
