However, the engagement lasted only a few days as she officially called it off Gary’s disappearance. He was reportedly last seen at Amber’s brother Shawn Portwood’s wedding in North Carolina.

Amber and Gary met on a dating app in 2023 and got engaged a few months later, around June 2024. This engagement was Amber’s fourth, following previous engagements with ex-Gary Shirley and ex-Matt Baier. According to US Weekly, the pair had been “putting in the work” into their relationship. However, it all ended when Gary stormed off Amber’s brother’s wedding without his phone or without contacting anyone.
A search was issued to find Gary who was listed as a Missing Person in North Carolina. Witnesses later spotted Gary in Oklahoma and New Mexico. He eventually contacted the authorities himself, informing them that he went “missing” by choice and asked them to call off the investigation.
After confirming his safety, Gary and Amber were no longer in contact. Then, Amber ultimately called off the engagement as she “took off the ring.” She described their relationship as “wonderful,” but cited an emotional discussion at her brother’s wedding about Gary’s parents disapproving of her as a cause of breakup.
Fans, having watched Amber on Teen Mom for years, blamed Amber for the split. Some believed Amber was at fault for their split, while others thought she was lying about calling off the engagement, claiming it was Gary who ended it. Amber went live with reporter Elle Bee, sharing insights into her and Gary’s emotional interaction at his brother’s wedding. “It was emotional, because it has something to do with the fact of his parents being Vietnamese, and me being who I am and stuff like that,” The Teen Mom star revealed at the time. “It had nothing to do with us personally, OK? This is the only thing that happened. He was very upset about this, I was upset.”
According to US Weekly, Gary’s parents had searched Amber on Google where they learned about her past antics. “[The engagement news] created some family tension,” a source told the publication. “Gary’s family was looking her up online and looking at her past and not everything they saw online was true.
