It was shocking when fans found out Janelle and Meri knew each other before they married Kody. A few seasons ago, TLC revealed that both of them were sisters-in-law before they became Sister Wives! More on that later. As a result, Meri believed she would get along well with the second wife as they knew each other beforehand. Hence, she made tons of efforts to be friends with her. But, it was of no use, and she felt rejected by Janelle. Almost three decades later, both the famous wives talked about the matter in the new episode of Sister Wives Season 16.
On the other hand, Janelle claimed that she felt no need to continue with the friendship with Meri as their relationship dynamics changed so much. This happened after she married Kody and became part of the family. During her interview segment, she said that the first wifes’ “forward” nature shut her down. Also, she didn’t know how to interact with someone so “direct” and “brutally honest”. When they talked in person, the mother of 6 also admitted that she doesn’t remember much from that time. Eventually, Meri came clean and said she could have done better and explained, “no one is perfect”.

As mentioned above, both Janelle and Meri knew each other before becoming sister wives. In fact, they were part of each other’s lives for ten years. It turns out Janelle’s first marriage was to Adam Barber. He was Meri’s brother. This means that both of them were sisters-in-law before. Janelle then became Meri’s sister-wife when Kody married the former. Hence, fans were in favor of Meri more when she opened up about her bond. They believe it wouldn’t have been easy for her to welcome someone she knew as her brother’s wife to her husband’s wife.
An account on Reddit observed that Janelle ended up marrying her “ex-brother in law”. Later on, another Redditor pointed out that they are step-siblings too. That’s because Kody’s father was married to Janelle’s mother. This entire tangled family tree alarmed all the viewers. Some fans on Instagram observed that the whole family pretended that everything was “wonderful” in the beginning when it was far from it. Another profile said they are glad that both the cast members can now talk about the situation instead of repressing their feelings.
