The 36st shop owner Luis Delgado has refused to participate in the Mexican version of My 600 Lb Life, called Kilos Mortales, for a shocking reason. Luis Delgado further emphasized that participating in the show would go against the ethos of his plus-size clothing brand, Big&Fashion. During an interview with Mexico’s El Herado, Delgado revealed that he was initially offered to join the show on social media by one of his followers.
However, he turned the offer down after some thought. “They offered me the operation, the psychologist, the assessment,” he stated. Delgado explained that the show promotes the opposite of what his brand, Big&Fashion, stands for, and he didn’t like that. Thus, he chose his clothing line over the show so he could continue to “eat the same way” and “promote obesity.”
Delgado also expressed his concern over the filming process, which is executed at the patients’ house, bypassing his privacy. “They told me that they were going to get inside my home, my family, that they were going to be inside my house 24/7 for a long period of time, invading my privacy as well as that of my family, because my mother, my sister, and my wife live there,” he explained to the publication.
The Mexican shop owner further revealed that the show offered to feature him in its first episode. However, he chose to walk out of the deal. Delgado then highlighted his health accomplishments, which he achieved without the help of any surgery.
“There are 50kg (7.8st) that I no longer have in my life. I weighed 285kg (44st), and today I weigh 230kg (36st), although some say that it is not noticeable,” he said. Notably, the show does not offer any revenue for participating in the show. Instead, they help the patients achieve weight control through bariatric surgery and psychological and medical support. The surgery in Mexico costs up to 110,000 Mexican pesos, which is around £4,800.

Speaking to El Sol De Mexico, Dr. Buenaventura Leal offered insights as to how My 600 Lb Life’s Mexican version can raise a lot of awareness. The Bariatrician specialist, who often appears on Kilos Mortales, believes that an obese patient is not a “round” patient but is prone to various diseases. “Obviously survival is going to decrease a lot and quality of life will worsen,” he said.
The doctor further claimed that 70 percent of Mexicans are overweight, while the rest 30 percent are obese. “It is something very important that we have to attack, but on the part of the entire society, of the government, of all Mexicans, this is the worst pandemic that exists,” he added.
