Royal expert Ingrid Seward mentioned on The Royal Beat that the Sussexes will unlikely lose their royal titles. Removing the titles’ Duke and Duchess of Sussex’ would need an act of parliament. Meghan Markle: From Duchess to Princess Henry?
“I doubt anything will change with the titles,” Seward told The Mirror. She explained, “If they lose them, Harry remains a prince by blood, and Meghan Markle would be Princess Henry.” Meghan’s new potential name could really confuse Americans. She added, “I think [it’s] probably best just to leave it because it looks unkind, it looks unnecessary.” Prince Harry’s birth name is Prince Henry Charles Albert David, but the whole world calls him Harry.
Hence, if Meghan Markle lost her Duchess title, she’d be called Princess Henry. This follows the tradition of a princess taking her husband’s name. The same goes for Princess Kate, who is technically Princess William. But the world has hailed her as the Princess of Wales or the Duchess of Cambridge since marrying Prince William in 2011. However, Seward emphasised that Harry and Meghan might retain their Duke and Duchess titles indefinitely.
“The Queen gave them the titles; let them keep them – they’re going to be ‘H and M’ anyway.” The royal commentator insists it would be best to let them be and move on, which is what the Palace and Royal Family are doing. Back in 2020, the Sussexes moved to California with their kids after stepping down as senior royals. Furthermore, royal author Tom Quinn says King Charles and Prince William have considered stripping their titles but fear it might backfire.
Quinn told The Mirror, “The last thing they want is to give the renegade royals something else to complain about.” Also, even without titles, Meghan Markle and Harry would still act like royals, with the whole world embracing them.
Critics Accuse the Sussexes of Leveraging Royal Ties!
In addition, critics argue that Meghan Markle and Harry leverage their royal connection without fulfilling royal rituals. They have secured lucrative deals with Netflix and Spotify, and Meghan still uses her Duchess title publicly. She even used her title on her new venture, American Riviera Orchard’s website and Instagram. Currently, the Sussexes maintain no speaking relationship with the royal family.
