Reports suggest that King Charles III remains in a very sticky situation ahead of a planned State visit. On July 4, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced a snap General Election. The political call led the British royal family to postpone their engagements for the month.
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson spoke about Sunak’s announcement calling a General Election: “The Royal Family will—in accordance with normal procedure—postpone engagements that may divert attention or distract from the election campaign.”
King Charles III: Political Climate Forces Charles to Rethink State Visit Schedule
The spokesperson added, “King Charles III sent their sincere apologies to any of those who may be affected as a result.” Next month, Emperor Naruhito of Japan and Empress Masako will to visit the UK for a State Visit. The Japanese royals will also attend a State Banquet with Charles, Queen Camilla, and other royals. The Prime Minister and the Home and foreign secretaries were slated to play vital roles during their visit.
However, the presence of Sunak, James Cleverly, and David Cameron might be inappropriate as the election draws close. Furthermore, Naruhito was earlier gearing up to address MPs and peers at Westminster, but with Parliament dissolving soon, this won’t be possible. Rumour has it that the officials are trying to find new dates for the State Visit.
However, King Charles III doesn’t wish to stretch the dates again, especially since the pandemic has already delayed it. Moreover, GB News Royal correspondent Cameron Walker talked about the royal engagements on X/Twitter. He wrote, “I understand D-Day memorial engagements will go ahead, but others will come under scrutiny on a case-by-case basis.” As Cameron confirmed, the royal family has currently delayed all the engagements for the Monarch.
Walker noted that during the General Election, the royal family naturally cancel engagement to prevent any political distractions. So, it seems like our favourite royals might be laying low until the elections are over. But hey, we’re not going anywhere—we can totally wait for them to make a comeback, right?
