EastEnders most loved star, Shona McGarty, better known for her role as Whitney Dean, left the BBC One soap last month. Even though fans are excited to see her doing new things, they were devastated to see her leaving the show.

Long-time viewers have been watching Whitney for the past 16 years and expressed their anger towards how the character’s exit storyline was written. As per reports, Shona McGarty has defended the show; let’s see what she said!!

EastEnders Alum Defends Her Exit Storyline

EastEnders actress Shona McGarty departed from the show last month after giving 16 years to the role. Viewers saw her moving to Wakefield with her adoptive daughter Britney and baby Dolly.

This all happened because her fiance’s cheating scandal with Lauren Branning was exposed on their wedding day. The issue that made it worse was he got to know that his mother figure, Bianca, knew about it and didn’t tell her. So, she decided to cut her out of her life altogether.

Fans saw Whitney leaving Walford on a bus and several family members and friends gathered to wave her off. However, this storyline has been receiving some criticism from fans who felt that Whitney’s exit was poorly written.

But, McGarty went out of her way and defended the plot and also hinted at a potential return. While speaking to RSVP Live, she said, “I think she did get her happy ending. It makes sense the way she left on the bus and the way she came in. It was very fitting and quite nice. At least she wasn’t under the bus! She could always come back.”

The actress also spoke about her upcoming role in 2:22: A Ghost Story and mentioned that transitioning from screen to stage can be challenging since there are no retakes. In addition, she spoke about her exit from EastEnders and said, “It feels great actually [to have left the soap] – I feel really free and excited for the future.”
