Rebecca Sarker has revealed a fascinating twist about her start on Emmerdale. The actress joined the ITV soap as Manpreet Sharma in 2018. Soon after, she began dating Rishi and married him a year later, becoming step-mum to Jai and Priya. She has been a part of multiple big storylines, including the Meena Jutla plot.
As the sister of the villainous Meena, Manpreet endured terrifying challenges like being held hostage and almost gassed to death in a barn. Sarker expressed her relief that a last-minute change in the debut storyline ensured Manpreet’s continued presence in Emmerdale.
She explained that the soap initially introduced Manpreet as a love interest for Rishi, and there had been a plan for her to cheat on him with his son, Jai. Originally, Manpreet was meant to be portrayed as a ‘gold digger’ and ‘temptress.’ The star said, “But I’m glad they didn’t go down that route, as it gave the character more longevity.”

Reflecting on the possibility of Manpreet and Jai becoming romantically involved, the soap actress shared that she would have found this scenario quite strange since she and Emmerdale actor Chris Bisson (Jai) had previously portrayed siblings in Coronation Street.
For now, Manpreet is dating vicar Charles Anderson. However, everything changed drastically when Charles’ son Ethan suddenly collapsed and died. After his son’s death, the village vicar is on a mission to discover the truth. He believes Ethan died because of a hit-and-run planned by Ruby Fox-Miligan.
