Tokyo Ghoul Season 5: Canceled Or Confirmed? 2020 Release Updates

Despite its controversial fourth season, fans are already dying to watch more of the popular anime. However, studio Pierrot currently has no plans to produce ‘Tokyo Ghoul Season 5. It’s been more than a year since the series ended. Hence, it’s finally time to ask some serious questions. Will it ever return? Here’s everything to know.

Tokyo Ghoul is a 2011 top-selling manga series written and illustrated by Sui Ishida. The story of the manga has been adapted as both, a light novel series and an anime. Back in 2014, the anime series debuted to much appreciation and praise from the audience and critics alike. It soon returned with a second season less than a year later. Whereas, the third and fourth seasons premiered as the first and second seasons of Tokyo Ghoul:re in 2018.

Tokyo Ghoul Season 5: Confirmed?

The fourth season of the dark fantasy anime did not perform well for manga readers. The creators actually packed an entire lot of 179 chapters in only 24 episodes of Tokyo Ghoul:re. Hence, the result didn’t turn out to be as satisfying for the fans of the manga series. In fact, the installment was criticized as messy, by a large number of viewers and critics.

However, there is still a bigger lot of people that love the anime series and want to watch more of it. Thus, the demand for Tokyo Ghoul Season 5 is still pretty high. However, the future of the popular anime looks quite dark.

The fourth season of the series wrapped up all remaining source material. The anime creators barely have any content to create another episode of the show. The first two seasons covered all chapters from the Tokyo Ghoul manga volumes, whereas Season 3 and Season 4 used all 179 chapters from the Tokyo Ghoul:re manga volumes.

Tokyo Ghoul Season 5

On the other hand, the fourth installment has officially concluded the story of the entire manga. The storyline of all characters, including Ken Kaneki and Touka Kirishima, has come to an end. The two of them have finally found their ‘happy ending. Whereas, now the Ghouls and Humans co-exist in a peaceful world. This barely leaves any conflict to be featured in ‘Tokyo Ghoul Season 5.’ Therefore, Pierrot is not planning to continue the anime any further.

Will ‘Tokyo Ghoul Season 5’ Ever Come Out?

As of now, possibilities for a fifth season aren’t very likable. The studio isn’t planning to extend the plot any further. Besides, they don’t have any source material to create future episodes. On the other hand, a large number of viewers (especially manga readers) believe that it’s better to end the anime here. In fact, they express that extending the plot after Season 4 finale may ruin the perfect ending.

However, it’s hard to ignore that Tokyo Ghoul has a huge following, half of which are expecting another season of the anime. In recent times, fans can have a massive influence on the renewal of shows. Plenty of animes and TV series have been saved due to audience demand and fan petitions. Considering that Tokyo Ghoul has a lot of people to sign that petition, it’s hard to believe that the anime is going anywhere for now.

Yet, the renewal of Tokyo Ghoul Season 5 is entirely dependant on manga writer Sui Ishida. The anime can only return if Ishida decides to continue the manga series by introducing an entirely new plot. However, as per the current situation, it doesn’t seem like the anime will return anytime soon.

Sui Ishida Is Busy!

Writer and illustrator of the manga series, Sui Ishida, is currently busy with a new manga series. According to a report by ANN, he has picked a new project called Jack Jeanne, which will be made in conjunction with Happinet and Broccoli. Hence, it seems that Ishida is not planning to return to Tokyo Ghoul anytime soon. This highly endangers the possibilities of a fifth season.

However, we can’t rule out the chances that Sui Ishida may write more chapters of Tokyo Ghoul once he’s done with Jack Jeanne. The talented manga artist may take a while to complete his current project. Hence, hopes are still high for the fifth season.

Will There Be A Spin-Off Series?

Since the story of the anime is already wrapped up, fans speculate that the studio may attempt to introduce a whole new plot. If so, the new story might not become part of the Tokyo Ghoul series anymore. Yet, the franchise can be extended through a spin-off series instead. Whereas, some sources say that Season 5 might focus on the baby of the half-ghoul Ken Kaneki and Touka. Well, as of now, these are just mere rumors and shall not be believed without official confirmation.

Tokyo Ghoul Season 5: Release Date

As of now, neither studio Pierrot nor Ishida Sui plans to pick up another season of the popular anime. Hence, the fifth season has low chances of return anytime sooner than 2021 or 2022.
