Watched the Demon Slayer Mugen Train yet? It has nearly been a week since Demon Slayer The Movie was released in North American theatres. Yet, the anime movie has already made it to the top charts. Despite releasing in the middle of a pandemic, the film managed to sweep all Japanese box offices as swiftly as a Marvel film. It looks like these same headlines will be seen in the U.S. scenario as well.
In the history of anime, no other movie has managed to do what Demon Slayer Mugen Train has achieved. It has broken the most prominent Japanese and international records in a time where films are struggling to seek a normal release.
Demon Slayer Mugen Train: Collections
This anime feature film has earned about 8.1 billion yen (US$74.9 million) internationally. In terms of ticket sales, the Mugen Train has sold about 8.78 million tickets in a total of 19 countries. The movie opened in three countries, including Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau, on October 30, 2020.
Surprisingly, it earned $26.8 million from these three countries alone. The number of tickets sold crossed 3.31 million. For Taiwan, the film single-handedly holds the record for the highest box office collection of any animated movie. For Southeast Asian countries, the film earned about $7.4 million. Even for Singapore, Mugen Train holds the position for the highest-earning anime film.
Demon Slayer Mugen Train: U.S. Earnings
The Demon Slayer Feature Film was released in U.S. theatres on April 23 this year. Since then, it has already earned a huge amount of money. Within only a week, the film earned about $21,144,800 at the U.S. box office. In fact, the movie has already been named the second-highest anime opening in the U.S. It is also called Funimation’s largest three-day opening weekend so far.
Mortal Kombat film is North America’s highest-grossing anime with a total collection of $22,515,000. Demon Slayer is not far behind this. In digital releases, Funimation and Aniplex have just begun screening the film. Hence, the film screened across 1,600 screens, including in 4DX and an IMAX cinema.
More Accolades
In Japan, Mugen Train remained on the top of the Box Office charts for 12 consecutive weeks. However, it was only in the second weekend of January 2021 that the movie jumped down to the second spot. The film has also ranked in the top three spots in Japan.
Mugen Train managed to surpass the Japanese award holder Spirited Away. Passing a classic film is an accolade on its own. Spirited Away is surely one of the best projects that the anime industry ever produced. It had earned 30.8 billion Japanese yen when it was first released. On the other hand, the Demon Slayer Mugen Train theme song was also on the top of all pop charts for a long time. The film may bag a nomination in the Best Animation category at the upcoming 2021 Academy Awards.
These were all the accolades that Demon Slayer has managed to bag in a time like this. When do you plan to go out and watch the film on the big screen? Share with us in the comment section. However, stay safe whenever you go out. For more updates on anime, keep visiting this corner.
